So, MYCPS! is an invaluable marketing resource that is free -- what's the catch!?

Well, MYCPS! also PREsells Sitesell's flagship site-building service Site Build It!. However, this has no bearing on the usefulness of MYCPS! to you -- it's still an outstanding guide to writing clear, effective copy for your website. And so I have no hesitation in highly recommending Make Your Content PREsell (and I don't highly recommend that many products/services on the internet I can assure you!).

Make Your Content PREsell! Review

MYCPS! starts with this question: what is preselling? And then it answers that question, namely:

• "PREselling is the online version of relationship-building"
• "PREselling warms up and builds trust and respect"

and then it shows you how to go about doing just that with a discussion of the so-called Big 2 of preselling:

1. Present a clean, intuitive, professional-looking "look and feel". (Yes, this sounds obvious, but I had forgotten this, and some of my sites had a bad 'look and feel' to say the least.) It shows you how to improve a site's 'look and feel', without the need of being a highly skilled graphic designer too! :-)
   
   
2. Use words to OVER-deliver what web surfers seek. (Somewhat less obvious, but I was aware of this concept. Even so, most of my sites tend to think about the site owner's needs - i.e. making money - more than the visitor's needs - easy-to-digest information! I created this modest resource on digital printing almost straightaway!)

Okay, so let's take a closer look at Make Your Content PREsell!

Words, Words, Words...

As you would expect, Ken shows you how to write good copy. (MYCPS! is a book on copywriting for the web, after all!)

However, this is not a book that shows you how to write flowery fiction. Instead, you learn about writing easy-to-create copy that helps your visitor find what he/she's looking for. It's also, Ken explains, vital that you write with your voice - think of this as writing how you speak.

As soon as you add 'your voice' to your writing, then you start to have a unique website. After all, you are unique (and so am I)!

The section on words and grammar is brief - it's much more detailed in Make Your Words Sell! - and so it's not a definitive guide to writing or grammar, but enough is covered for most needs. (Admittedly, I skipped over this section a little - perhaps I shouldn't have! ;-) )

"Know Your Customer"

NB before you can write a single word, mind, you must must know your customer; know how he or she thinks as much as possible, and what it is that they are looking for.

What you want to create is a website that your ideal visitor thinks has been written for him/her.

(Can you imagine how successful this site would be, if you could create it!?)

I'll finish this brief review with this comment: I make a full-time living online and to do this, I rely on words.

Now I'm not a fantastic copywriter, but I do earn my living from words so I can't be that bad. Having said that, I still learnt quite a lot of things that I was 'doing wrong' simply by reading Dr Ken Evoy's Make Your Content PREsell.

And I will be rereading it fully, at the start of 2006. (How about you, or whoever it is that is responsible for designing/building your site?). My recommendation to you...

Whether you own Site Build It! or not, building websites that offer your site visitors well-written (and helpful) content is a winning (long-term) strategy. Make Your Content PREsell shows you why, and more importantly it shows you how !
